ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Mother and Child was inspired by a true story that happened in China, during a devastating earthquake in Szechuan, in 2008. The mother and the child were dug out of the rubble, with the mother arched over protecting the baby while breastfeeding, where is the happiest and most secure place for a baby, while she was battling in desperation. The mother died but the baby survived. This act of unconditional self-sacrificial love moved me deeply, especially as a mother of three myself. I have subsequently portrayed this story in different ways, with different mediums: oil, marble, plaster and 3D printing between 2009-2019. And yet there is another way I would like to speak of this love story. Hence, the sales from this 3D printing edition of Mother And Child will be dedicated to the installation fund of this story tellingct of unconditional self-sacrificial love moved me deeply, especially as a mother of three myself. Where Abstract Spiritual World Meets Physical Earthly World Is Called Life; And Art Is The Bridge." Her works are about humanity, philosophy, thinking and art. She consider the act of creation an adventure, an exploration, a meeting - not simply about skillful repetition. The way she sees Chinese calligraphy has been philosophical, spatial, sculptural. And that vision matured and materialised after a decade of living in the UK, since 1997. Being the foremost sculptor to bring ancient Chinese calligraphy into inter-spatial sculptures ( Wind Series - Carefree) is deeply rooted in her family upbringing. Asia was further encouraged by the calligraphy garden at The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, where she used to sit and ponder during a decade of voluntary work. Just as Chinese Calligraphy is the reason Asia started modelling sculptures, the need to tell a particular true story (“Mother and Child” 2008) is how she started stone carving. Unexpectedly, with stone carving Asia found a bond, a special connection that intrigues, with endless possibilities of conversation through the inherent language of the stone itself. To her, working with stone is like connecting dots between past and future, meeting in the action of the present. Working with time and through time, of transcendence. Regarding Asia's artistic influence, there are 3 artists/sculptors she looks up to, not for their artistic style or subjects but for their outlook to art and attitude towards creating. She admires Da Vinci for his scientific mind, innovations, rational thinking and holistic approach; Jacob Epstein's radical The Rock Drill especially in its historical context; and is touched by Michelangelo's hard work, faith and belief.
