ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece began as a clear blown-glass bowl. The design visible from the inside is back-painted from the outside. Then, I replicated the pattern on the outside by covering the orange shapes with clear glass and the white areas with opaque white glass. When it is lit up, the orange glows. The result is a study in the contrast between painted glass - smooth and cool - versus mosaic, appears almost like textile - textured and warm.

Art should point to the space between thoughts. There is something beautiful, sometimes frightening and always strange that underlies and unifies everything. I’m always trying to get a glimpse of this strangeness out the corner of my eye. There is something about the sharp, hard materials of mosaic and the colors of glass and stone that I find irresistible. The interstices between the tesserae are an analogy for the unifying force.
