About The Artwork

This soft sculpture is about beachcombing meditations; trash and treasure brought by the sea or left on a beach; beautiful weeds in all shapes and sizes; out-of-water fish, jellyfish and crabs; weird sea creatures that usually hide in the deepest crevices of the rocks but somehow end up stranded under the hot sun... I was also thinking how a public beach unites us all, equalizes all, distilling our primal emotions of joy, peace and tranquility. This piece extends to 80 inches tall: it's 75 inches tall hanging on my wall. The satchel pocket in the right bottom corner is designed to hold your found beach treasures: at this time a round seed (from a palm tree?) I found on a public beach in Mexico found its home there. You may want to fill it with your own treasures. A variety of techniques used in this piece, i.e. crochet, weaving, knitting, embroidery, fabric manipulation, etc. Materials used are my own clothes, beach blankets, as well as many beach finds. This soft art piece began with weaving short strands of fishing nets and cables found on Mexican beaches into desired forms and shapes, and then it just grew. This piece is held by pushpins, but you may want to use small anchors for this purpose. You may hang it on a wall, or in an open space, or as a room divider. Some piece materials are reflective and play with daylight, creating wonderful shadows. This lightweight piece will be shipped securely packaged in a cardboard box, rolled in layers of bubblewrap.

Poetry, music, rebellion, femininity, humour and wonder of my world reveal themselves in images, both soft and hard, always mysterious, always in layers of meaning. My stories emerge like flowers opening up their petals, one at a time, as I try to bring to light all the facets of a certain moment in time, of a beautiful memory. But in the end, or in the beginning, it's all about love. I explore painting as a connection to our human vulnerability, of which love is its ultimate manifestation. https://www.instagram.com/gone_with_chinook/
