About The Artwork

The statue of St.Sebastian in Portuguese Cork Oak was originally commissioned for a client as the patron saint of Homosexuals, hence pierced by arrows, which were omitted in this case. It became a figure of debate and now stands for sale as a representation of the suffering of man in general, freed from its original context or any religious connotations. The Portuguese Cork Oak lent itself particularly well for this figurative representation due to the fact that it was gnarled and twisted in all the right places, making it possible to enter into a creative dialogue with the wood and the design, without superimposing the later in favor of the first.

Soeren Ernst, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1967. I felt a strong calling to work in the three dimensional from the age of 17. At 19 I worked in the studio of German sculptor Joerg Plickat for a duration of two years. Travelling through Europe as a 'journeyman' I became a young independent sculptor and had first exhibitions in Scotland, where I also won 1st price in 'The arts of Scotland' competition, Pennicuik. On first visiting Portugal in 1989 I fell in love with the country and its people and the great variety of stones available for the sculptor. Since the 1990s I spend the summer in Germany and the winter months in Portugal.
