ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist's photo of the sculpture of the butcher's daughter Welcome to the worlds of figures! The following 6 figures belong to the group LIVING PEOPLE, to which I then also made the book MORE THAN A PUPPET. In 2010 I started to ask myself who is alive here and who is an unmoving sculpture, because I observed again and again with pleasure how the audience often merged into an unmoving block when looking at the figures, which were "only" things - and which nevertheless often showed a greater liveliness and presence than the people. Also: how little mobility it would probably need with the figure to show it alive. I was also attracted to object alienation, an element that I had become familiar with from clowning and object theater - and so things took their course.....In the "Butcher's Daughter", too, things are used symbolically as body parts. A perfume bottle as body, sensual mink as hair, but also in its dynamics like a bashfully seductive gesture of the hand, or to be interpreted as an animal tail. The butcher's daughter is wrapped in a precious Hérmès shawl - but it lies very tightly around her neck and face, and is probably not self-chosen, but rather a prestige object of her father, who plays an overpowering role in the life of the butcher's daughter, as the text tells us. - Just as the pearls on her feet, which are not pearls at all, not only decorate her, but also give her the uneasy feeling of being shackled. As if glued to her fate, this butcher's daughter stands before us - sad, and yet also proud and upright; and we have the unique chance to share in her thoughts and longings. You can read the entire text about the character: "The Butcher's Daughter" in the book LIVING PEOPLE. There are still a few copies in my studio, which I will gladly send upon request.
