About The Artwork

The Nail Inventor is a sculpture composed of steel nails of various ilk seated on a wooden base. As with all my sculptures, every item used is found on the farm – in this case the workshop. Types of nails used include: Oboe nails, panel pins, wire round nails, galvanised roofing nails, clout head nails. I created this piece in August 2015 sitting in a deck chair whilst in pursuit of a fox. The red fox in question had been helping himself to my free range geese as they wandered gaily in their meadows. It was me and my agricultural livelihood verses Vulpes vulpes. I loaded a wheel barrow with a deck chair, hand tools, a half hundred weight sack of nails my grandfather purchased at a farm sale in 1981 and the 12 bore and scouted out a suitable hide that overlooked the geese from which to await my prey. It was in this waiting period, each afternoon for a month, that I created the nail man. I witnessed a diversity of nature in that time, finished The Nail Inventor but I never did see the fox. Far too inventive for me.

1. I am a farmer by trade in a perfect corner of East Anglia. 2. I create my artwork when the curvature of time and space allow - and all the animals have been checked. 3. Painting a portrait whilst ploughing is practically impossible. 4. I look on every day with delight at the similarities between agriculture and art.
