About The Artwork

My point of departure is the intersection between our prevalent culture of tourism and the fictionalization of culture, especially within developing “exotic” countries. Crevette is inspired by beach culture, travel pillows and ideas of "exotic cuisine." Having been born in Sri Lanka, I often question the ideas of modern tourism for cultural knowledge. I tend to believe we only arrive at a binary mystification.

Michella Perera’s work explores notions of selfhood; the intricacies and relationships she has pertaining to her country of birth – Sri Lanka. A string of activities are undertaken in a ritual test of the terms of her relationship/engagement to various aspects of her subjective self. The activities are self-engrossed and often juxtapose the familiar with the unfamiliar. Further adding to this act of demarcating the self, is the act of displaying the self. She is interested in points where meaning structures and subjectivities become malleable and acts as a host for material understanding, personal sensations, images and memories, whilst also catalyzing new ones. In attempting to understand these tangled relationships, which often defy easy logic, a new system of meaning and understanding is employed, a physical one. It relates to the body of the maker, the body of the viewer, and semantic and syntactic relationships between individual elements of the installation. Michella Perera is a Sri Lankan born, Irish artist, currently based in Glasgow. She holds an MFA from Glasgow School of Art, having graduated in 2017. She is the recipient of awards from Glasgow Sculpture Studios, Scotland and The National Sculpture Factory, Ireland. Perera has participated in residencies and exhibitions both in the UK and internationally. Exhibitions include House for an Art Lover, Glasgow; Temple bar, Dublin; Centrale 7, France and Tactic, Cork Ireland. Residencies include PECAH, India
