“VELVET MEANDERS” is a smaller and more contained work following in the footsteps of the series of large sculptures that were realized specifically for a personal exhibition entitled INTRINSIC FREQUECIES held within and on the battlements of the castle of Santa Severina in Calabria, in southern Italy. The series is entitled “Germogli” which means “Seedlings, Buds, Shoots, or Germinations”, it captures the sense of the beginning of growth coupled with that of a change of entity, a bud becomes a flower, a nut sprouts and grows to become a tree. Furthermore I wanted to link this action of growth, of realization, to human attitudes and characteristics, so this series is entitled according to the nature of the expansion of the geometric form and the choice of the colour that is revealed within. The colour is the entity of the seed within the hard, in this case metallic, shell of the nut. The title of this specific work is “Velvet Meanders”. The cut faces of the cube are rotated around a diagonal axis thus the cube form turns both in and out on itself, as a reflective thought. The inner colour is a dark almost midnight blue. “Velvet Meanders” is a reference to those end of the day night time meanderings of a reflective mind. The sculpture is mounted on a stainless steel rod held vertical in the clear acrylic base by two micro bearings permitting the work also to be observed in rotation by swivelling the rod.

I'm an English artist now living in Italy. I grew up in northern England, in Derbyshire. Having artist parents I grew-up being encouraged to observe everything around me. Living in a landscape surrounded by hills I was always curious to see what was on the other side of those hills, beyond those hills were others ; curiosity is an incessant stimulus. I studied art at Manchester Polytechnic, the London College of Printing, and the Royal College of Art. Concluding my studies for some years I worked for periods in studios in Italy and Norway, punctuated by returning to England to make and exhibit my own work, and tuitioring as visiting lecturer at Manchester Polytechnic and Wrexham College of Art & Design. In 1991 I joined the accademic staff at Manchester Metropolitan University, as Lecturer in Ceramics in the department of 3Dimensional Design. However in 1993 I took the decision to leave the post at Manchester to join my companion in Italy. Setting up my own studio I began working and exhibiting in my own right in Italy and abroad. My work is present in various contemporary art museums and pubblic collections and I have realizzed commissions for both organizzations and private clients.
