ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I am a neuroscience Ph.D., and artist that creates sculptural artwork made out of natural silk. The use of silk is homage to the metaphor of the father of modern Neuroscience Ramon y Cajal that referred to the neurons as the "butterflies of the soul". (See images 2, 7 and 9 of my portfolio). I have created a process of silk casting that I use to cast small figurines (angels, saints, hyenas, wolves, lizards, etc) and ornamental motifs that contain neuronal elements (brains, spinal cord, thalamus, hippocampus, etc.). I arranged all these motifs creating complex baroque compositions. In my work, I create textures that make the silk to resemble a marble classical sculpture because of its whiteness, brilliance, and brightness. I also make braids and even I use an iron-hair to create different textures. Multiple braids, fibers, rope-like structures, or double helix create a sense of overabundance and highly dense relieves.
