Rachel Wilberforce

Through mixed media installation and photography, Wilberforce's practice explores heterotopic, liminal and ruptured terrain, and the interstices of place and action. She is interested in the relationship between our interior and exterior worlds, and approaches landscape, the body and architecture as interchangeable. By photographing empty spaces or reworking found imagery and objects, her work draws from the residual and trace in the materiality of the environment, or artefact, and details its history and presence. Currently, Wilberforce is particularly interested in how site specificity and 3D structures determine a photograph's objectness. By working with print collages in juxtaposition with found objects and mixed media configurations, she explores how the image mutates, breaks or becomes material, through a play of spatiality.

Wilberforce has exhibited both nationally and internationally including Open Eye Gallery, Tate Modern, Freud Museum, Courtauld Institute of Art, Leeds Art Gallery, Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), BFI Southbank, Stanley Picker Gallery, Van Abbemuseum and Ron Mandos.
