Roberto Almeida

I am a Brazilian-born mixed media artist. By the age of four, I was already drawn to art. Art became my passion. Without truly understanding the notion of adulthood and careers, I instinctively knew that art was essential to my essence as a person and was as necessary for me as much as food, water, or air. For me, drawing and painting was an indispensable life-saving outlet that allowed me to cope with many of the difficulties and struggles that I faced as a child. Through my adolescence, I studied the artistic styles and techniques of the “old masters” including the rich history of Brazilian painters from Aleijadinho to Weingärtner as I forged my own style that has evolved into a bridge of expressionism with Pop art.

Throughout my current work, I depict ravens, the oft-referenced black plumaged carrion-eating birds in literature and in cultural legends, to symbolize my struggles of early childhood. Each painting tells the story of my ever-present battle for freedom and my pursuit of happiness. Eventually ,and happily, the raven undergoes a metamophosis, transforming into a dove.
