Raymond Ssekajigo is a Ugandan-American contemporary artist whose minimalist practice reimagines East African cultural heritage through bold form, balance, and color. Inspired by the elegance of Ankole cattle horns, woven baskets, ceremonial objects, and everyday traditions, I create minimalist compositions that celebrate heritage through shape, balance, and color.
Growing up in Uganda gave me a lasting appreciation for the quiet beauty embedded in everyday cultural objects. Rather than documenting them as they are, I reinterpret them as symbols of identity, resilience, craftsmanship, and memory. My work invites viewers to reconsider familiar forms, revealing them as timeless symbols of identity, memory, and cultural continuity.
Each artwork begins with careful observation and develops into a refined composition where every curve, color, and negative space has purpose. I strive to create pieces that feel timeless, works that can live comfortably in modern collections while carrying the history and spirit of the culture that inspired them.
My vision is to contribute to the growing global conversation around contemporary African art by creating work that is both visually striking and culturally meaningful.
Self-taught contemporary artist with a practice built through independent study, continuous experimentation, and dedicated portfolio development. My artistic education is grounded in observation, discipline, and an ongoing exploration of contemporary African visual culture.
