Rik Hammond lives and works in Orkney - the group of islands which lie off the northernmost tip of Scotland. Originally from Hastings in East Sussex, he studied Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art and Design in Cornwall.
Rik works in a variety of media, including painting and drawing, print, digital media, site-specific installation, bookworks, sound, film, photography, time-based interaction and mail art. Much of his work is experimental, conceptual and abstract, although he routinely implements traditional drawing materials (e.g. paper, pencil and ink). He has a particular interest in Art and; research, culture (especially memetics), technology/science, social capital and collaboration and is interested in investigating the nature, meaning and production of visual art and the way in which it is (or can be) 'read' - particularly the roles of artist, audience, participant and curator.
Between 2011 and 2012 he was the artist-in-residence for the Orkney World Heritage Site - The Heart of Neolithic Orkney - working alongside archaeologists and developing new work which considered ways in which Orkney's landscape, culture and heritage could be interpreted through the combined lens of archaeological study and contemporary art.
