Ritu Raj was raised inside Indian modernism. His father, the critic K.B. Goel, championed Souza, Husain, and Swaminathan; Ritu grew up at Dhoomimal Gallery, where abstraction was the language of the house before it was his practice.
He paints from Phoenix, in two bodies of work. Organic Movement releases thread across wet paint, surrendering to gravity and viscosity — mark-making with physics inside it. Abstract Inquiry is slower: a listening practice, where the canvas signals and he responds, and the painting decides when it is done. Across both, the question is the same: how far a painting can travel from what we recognize, and what remains when there is nothing left to name.
The same restlessness built cloud computing, ridesharing, Wag Hotels, Diamond Foundry. Different materials, one obsession — giving structure to what is felt before it has a name. Today that obsession is ArtGraph, a language system for encountering abstract art, and two books: The Shape of Seeing and The Unalgorithmic Self.
