Rounak Rai — Indian Contemporary Artist

Rounak Rai is an Indian contemporary artist whose artistic vision brings Indian cultural heritage, folk traditions, tribal art, and contemporary expression into a distinctive visual language. His practice explores the relationship between tradition and modernity, mythology and human experience, spirituality and social responsibility.

Inspired by the richness of Indian folk and tribal art, Rai incorporates expressive lines, rhythmic dots, vibrant colours, symbolic figures, and intricate textures into his evolving artistic vocabulary. Through this approach, he seeks to reinterpret India's artistic heritage for contemporary audiences.

His extensive painting series draw inspiration from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Shiva Purana, Vishnu Purana, and Devi Purana. Powerful female deities, particularly Kali and Durga, occupy an important place in his work, representing strength, dignity, transformation, and women's empowerment.

Education and Artistic Development

Rounak Rai completed his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Painting in 2011 from the Institute of Fine Arts, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. He subsequently undertook two years of professional art training at Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, under the guidance of Yusuf Sir, where he refined his drawing skills, learned to simplify forms, and developed a more personal approach to visual expression.

His artistic language has evolved through an exploration of India's rich folk, tribal, and traditional art practices. Inspired by Gond and Bhil tribal art, he incorporates rhythmic dots, fine lines, intricate patterns, and expressive details into his compositions. From Indian folk traditions, he draws inspiration for the use of bold, vibrant colours, while traditional Indian art informs his use of earthy tones, particularly in backgrounds, creating visual depth and a strong connection with cultural roots.

His professional training at Bharat Bhavan played an important role in simplifying drawings and transforming complex figures into expressive, symbolic forms.
