This is my personal Renaissance project of classical Japanese painting. I create images of classical as well as contemporary subjects and they inform each other to pose a question of what it means to be here and now in the history of human culture.
My main influences are painters from the Edo period such as Tawaraya Sotatsu, Ogata Korin, Ito Jakuchu, Soga Shohaku, Nagasawa Rosetsu.
I practiced calligraphy from age 8 to 12, then I taught myself ink painting for a few years, had a tutor for one year, and then went to art school in Tokyo to get a bachelor’s degree in painting. This all hearken back (or forward) to the sense of amazement I had when I see an exhibition of imperial art collection in Kyoto National Museum at the age of 12.
