Sally Hands is an established wood engraver printmaker based in Swansea, known for her Swansea and South Wales landscapes. She is an elected member of the Society of Wood Engravers and has exhibited with them.

In 2017 she had work in the National Original Print Exhibition in London and won the John Purcell Prize.

She has received two Arts Council of Wales’ grants and exhibited with the Society of Wood Engravers in London, Seattle and Beijing. Originally trained in fine arts at Edinburgh Art College in the seventies, she worked in textiles before starting as a printmaker 25 years ago.

Sally draws from life and transfers the drawing onto a block of boxwood. She carves into the block so the image is left in relief. This process may take several months. The block is then inked up and paper pressed onto the relief surface. The paper is peeled off and the original print is revealed. Sally will print a limited edition of 50 to 100 prints.

Sally is a professional artist who loves to draw living things- people, animals, plants and their environment. She is also a spinner, weaver and piano teacher.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate, Edinburgh College of Art.
Awarded Andrew Grant Scholarship for postgraduate drawing and painting.
