About Sanghee Ahn

Sanghee Ahn was born in Seoul, Korea and grew up across different places around the world - Europe, America, Africa and Southeast Asia. This multicultural background led her to develop her own uniquely rich visual archive reflecting the wide diversity of cultural worlds and natural sceneries - developed and emerging worlds, different dominant religious and political institutions, the diverse flora and fauna of the rain forest in contrast to the vastly empty desert in Africa, and so on. This experience of constantly moving across and having to adapt to different territories during the formative years allowed her to become more aware of the environments that are largely shaped and presented by the controlling people inhabiting them. Hence, in a way, her practice of employing both the figurative and the abstract visual element reflects her utopian search for freedom and happiness - a pure state of mind before the formation of learned responses and institutional incentivization. Employing the automatism of Surrealism in the figurative portrayals, she plays with the random arrangement of the symbolic and cultural weights of the depicted subject which encompass many things from childhood nostalgia to current issues covered by media that affect our living conditions. The geometric wave pattern which is in contrast to the diagrammatic aesthetics of the figurative arena symbolizes the initially pure state of mind - before the entrance of any meanings and values assigned by the culture. Using expandable units that can stretch forever in the perceived mind and grids that do not assign any order or hierarchy, her pure abstract composition or element is like a total deletion of any visual algorithm which usually runs through the reproduced images in the digital and printed commercial and political world.
Being an internationally active artist, Sanghee Ahn has not only been prolific in Korea but has also had shows in many cities such as New York, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, Hong Kong, Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, and Manila. Her art has been exhibited at and collected by national institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
