Sarah Barker Brown

As a figurative painter I focus on the female body and within it the inner emotions as well as the exterior lives of women. Intimate moments, the depths of female friendships, the social dimensions of being a woman and celebrating sexuality, seduction and pleasure, all illuminated through a lens of nostalgia and tenderness.

In recent works (2019-22) I have focussed my paintings on everyday moments which were thrown into sharp relief by the global pandemic. Intimacies were missed and treasured in memory, simple pleasures are now tender and intense on reflection, in a time when these experiences were curtailed.

I am a London-based artist with a degree in Classical Studies, a training in Footwear Design from Cordwainers College, London and a previous life founding and running a successful footwear company.
Graduating in 2017 (First class Honours) from London's Art Academy, where I studied under Tai Shan Shierenberg, I have been practising as a full-time artist for the last five years.
