Sara Melis

Sara Melis (Italy, 1978) is an artist and designer. After a technical education in design and eco design at the Politecnico di Torino, she further developed research focused on sustainability and the relationship between matter, process, and surface.
Her artistic practice centers on raw earth as material presence and primary substance. Soil, collected from its place of origin, is applied directly onto the canvas without any painterly transformation.

Matter is not reduced to pigment, but manifests as a sensitive body, subject to cracks, contractions, and stratifications generated by time and the natural process of drying.

The artist’s intervention takes the form of an essential and refined gesture, in direct relation with the telluric element. Incised and traced marks do not impose a form, but accompany the material in its becoming, establishing a dialectic between presence and absence, between gesture and time.
The canvas becomes a space for the manifestation of substance: matter does not represent, but presents itself as a concrete presence.
