To me each painting is an exploration of colours, shapes, textures, rhythm and meaning. As I am layering colours the changing hues and tones evoke a variety of feelings and thoughts. The interplay of nature’s forces- transitory and perpetual, integrated and disparate, light and dark all manifest in the canvas in a state of flux. New meanings, new paths and choices that my mind otherwise would not have foreseen appear and disappear. My mind tries make sense of what emerges in front of me and the mood it evokes. The process itself shows the way. At the end, sometimes I am left with nothing, only exhaustion. But on other occasions one has a feeling of completion.
As a trained social worker P. Saraswati was exploring the curriculum through art forms to connect with learners from marginalized communities. Engagement with creative teaching skills led her pursue painting seriously and she took courses at Triveni Kala Sangam at New Delhi, with Mr S. Dhanapal at Chennai and with Michaele Harrigton at Maryland. She had her first solo show in 1997 and since then she has had numerous solo and group shows in different parts of India.
Though her interests in painting and education often conflict, they also complement each other and enable her to pursue each with renewed interest. She continues to participate in educational initiatives while exploring her painting.
