About Stanley Bermudez

I was born on January 9, 1965 in New Orleans, of Venezuelan parents. Sixteen months after my birth my family moved back to Venezuela. I was raised in the cities of Maracaibo and Cabimas. These years were formative years and shaped me and influenced me artistically. As a child, I always demonstrated the ability to draw, model, and paint.

In 1983 after graduating from High School in Venezuela I moved to the United States, specifically to Houston to start my college education. At North Harris College (now Lone Star College) a counselor suggested I take art classes to improve my English. My English improved and I loved my art classes so much that I realized art was my calling. I decided to get a Bachelor of Fine Arts and in 1988 I transferred to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. In December of 1990 I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art. In 1997 I moved to Virginia and I started my graduate work at Radford University. In May of 2000 I received a Master of Fine Arts from that same institution.

Since the year 2000 I have been concentrating mainly on painting. In 2001 I moved to Lubbock, TX and started teaching part time a Texas Tech University. There I ran a home studio and dedicated a lot more time to painting. I moved to Athens, Georgia in 2006. In Athens I have been able to manage a studio at home and outside the home as well, where I make large format paintings. I have also been able to teach art in Georgia at the University of Georgia, Georgia College and State University, and the University of North Georgia. full time Art Lecturer at the University of North Georgia. I also continue to exhibit my work nationally and internationally.

Events

Although I am a passionate art instructor, I am also an artist with thirty years of experience. I bring many of my experiences as an artist into the classroom, which in turn, has been an additional benefit to my students. My Latino heritage informs my work as a painter and artist, not only in the themes that I use in my work, but the vibrant colors I use as well. As detailed in my vitae, I have been producing and exhibiting my artwork consistently at a variety of art venues. I have a long record of local, national, and international art exhibitions and have participated in many solo shows as well as group shows, lectures, and art competitions. Throughout the years I have been able to not only help students artistically but also mentor them professionally.
Finally, I have a strong commitment to service and professional development. I have steadily presented and attended art conferences such a SECAC, MACAA, CAA and NALAC. I am a member of the Southeastern College Art Conference where I have presented my artwork and research. I am also a member of Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts, The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation, and Athens Institute of Contemporary Art.
