Born in 1953 in Leningrad (USSR), Sergeev is a painter whose artistic career is part of the history of Saint Petersburg's nonconformist art.
In 1973, he graduated from the Department of Theatre Design at the V. A. Serov Art School in Leningrad (now the N. K. Roerich Art School in Saint Petersburg). He then continued his studies at the V. I. Mukhina Higher School of Industrial Art (now the Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design), which he left before graduating in order to devote himself entirely to his artistic career.
During these formative years, Sergeev deepened his knowledge of the techniques of the Old Masters—including the preparation of painting grounds, layered painting, and etching—as well as the philosophy of the Northern Renaissance through the works of Lucas Cranach, Rogier van der Weyden, Jan van Eyck, Hugo van der Goes, Pieter Bruegel, and Hieronymus Bosch. At the same time, he developed a strong interest in the artistic traditions of Northern China and the imagery of Zen Buddhism. From this reflection emerged a fundamental principle that has remained central to his entire body of work: the concept of "simplicity and complexity."
