Stephanie Jory, born 1978 in London. I work and live in London as a figurative and portrait painter.Since graduating in 2000, i have moved from installation work to oil painting on canvas. I like to work big and bold, in size, colour and mood. The nudes are about the expression of the body without an overriding facial expression. I like to juxtapose the detail and sumptuousness of the human form with a simple,monochromatic/blockcoloured background or landscape. For me, the theme is about finding yourself in a foreign environment, naked and vulnerable but the feeling of the figure is decided by the viewer's reaction. I am inspired by Gary Hume,Lucian Freud,Jessica Stockholder and Ewan Euglow. The commisioned portraiture I do is about capturing the character of the person, their passion, vulnerability and life wisdom, even with children. A visual likeness is imperative but not enough on it's own. I recently did some horse paintings, an album cover for someone and am currently working on a couple of landscapes and a self-portrait.
