Stephan Ruch

I am a Swiss artist who has developed a rather extraordinary style of art: since 2007 I have created sand images representing impressionistic and sometimes surreal objects. My sand art covers themes such as nature, harmony, humanity and divinity. It often represents clearly recognisable and graphic elements. Yet my compositions always allow more than one level of interpretation in a visual, personal or spiritual way. The most characteristic quality of my art is the preoccupation with light and shadow. If my pictures show light falling on one part of the sand's surface small spaces are darkened. This leads to a special 3D effect. I like to think of this effect as "manifestation of magic".
