My latest body of work comes from a combination of my own sense of place, a time where I find myself in my permanent home after a lifetime of transience.
The permanence and routine which I experience now does bring a sense of security and belonging and yet strangely it’s the landscape surrounding me to which I feel the most connection.
The theory of residency to me is not a finality but a moment in time and it made me think about our collective concept of home and what it means within our irish culture. So many Irish have left our shores in search of a better life and have made another country their home. Houses and homesteads along the Western coast lay vacant or derelict from families forced to leave in years gone by. Holiday homes empty but owned by second or third generation children of immigrants eager to maintain their connection to the land of their forefathers.
The weight of this concept contained within these structures against the stunning vistas of West Cork formed the basis of this body of work
