The work of the visual artist Sylvia Frankena (1973) moves in the field of tension between the sensory perception of the physical world and its gradual abstraction. At the heart of her oeuvre are landscapes, enclosed gardens and architectural spaces, which a layered approach to painting transforms into a poetic reality of their own.
The dialogue between figuration and abstraction
Frankena’s artistic signature is a continual interplay between recognisable form and its dissolution. Motifs such as vegetation, passages and architectural elements are not merely depicted; they serve as a starting point for questioning the picture plane. Forceful, expressive brushstrokes are set beside refined, meditative details, giving the work a distinctive visual tension and depth.
