Sylwia Tur was born and raised in Poland. After moving to the United States in her late teens, she continued to study linguistics, while discovering her passion for art. Amid working towards a Ph.D. in linguistics she could no longer ignore her desire for art-making. She thus decided to pursue art full-time while completing a post-baccalaureate studies in ceramics at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Tur is interested in language, architecture, and design, distilled to their basic components of organization, grid, proportion, and reduction.
Modernism, minimalism, and brutalist architecture, growing up in communist Poland, seeing the rise of solidarity and observing the country undergo political, social, and economic changes, have all shaped her perception and aesthetics.
Sylwia’s artwork is in private and public collections in Australia, France, Poland, and the US. In addition to her art practice, she works as a linguist, a field from which she continues to draw inspiration.
