Tanja Nyo

Graduated as a painter in Helsinki based art school. Nyo’s art is primarily abstract painting. In her works, she examines contemporary phenomena, corporeality, the brain, movement and rhythm, as well as the human relationship to the ecosystem.
"Imperfection inspires me and It's a cornerstone of my art. Roughness opens up new meanings for forms and beauty: An error is a gateway to dare."
Time does not appear in her paintings as a linear narrative, but as a layered experience: as memory, movement and constant change. This is evident in the multi-layered nature of her works and references to the past and present simultaneously.
Another central theme is the body and mind – especially the brain, movement and rhythm. Although the works are abstract, they often refer to organic shapes, cell-like structures and rhythms reminiscent of biological processes. Corporeality is not anatomical depiction, but sensory and experiential.
Environmental issues are essential in art making: "I often use recycled materials and paints over old pieces. Many of my paintings have interesting layers and past lives."
