My name is Theodoros Zervas and I am a Greek self-taught artist. Through my work, I try to explore emotional states that can be difficult to express verbally. These often revolve around isolation, belonging, tension, memory, and the traces that experiences leave behind, so overall things we may want to let go of, but do not always know how to carry or understand.
I work mainly with black and red, using repetition, interruption and contrast to create a sense of presence, tension and sometimes unease.
Although painting is often my starting point, I like to move beyond the flat surface. I use materials such as fabric, thread, clay and cut canvas, and sometimes construct elements or introduce light,
allowing the materials themselves to become part of what the work is trying to express.
My work often begins with something personal, but I do not want to tell a fixed story. I prefer to leave enough space for the viewer to recognize something familiar, connect it to their own experiences, and perhaps find a different meaning from the one that
originally led me to create the work.
