About Toby Moate
A chum 'borrowed me' to practice his photography - so here are some images. ........ A hobby became - rather surprisingly another occupation, after I went part-time from my consultant psychiatrist job and devoted more time to THIS . As I worked in a 'proper job' until recently my ability to do exhibitions has only just started, but have stuff up locally around Cheltenham in bars and offices. Mainly self-taught, but I go to classes at the excellent and very jolly Cheltenham Fine Art (CFA) School (recommended). No nonsense artist - paints etc because fun and people like my stuff. Hate 'esoteric/enigmatic' types. Anyone can shoot me if I ever say 'my art challenges perceptions' etc. Work from home studio 'Helios House' (silly but I like it name). Have painting on 3 continents, so feel slightly international. Sell via website and word of mouth, but like many have to eat baked beans and do odd jobs to supplement income. Just thought I'd put stuff on this sight to see if I can eat less of the beans! Comments and requests always welcome (as long as constructive criticism!). Toodle Pip!
Mostly self-taught artist having been rather put off art college by beret-wearing bulls**t arty types in adolescence. Went to medical school and psychiatry instead (to fathom out people)
- rather emotionally abused childhood
- being bullied and laughed at by 'sporty types' at school
- a lot of doodling and daydreaming while bored in double French classes (or equivalent)
- being ignored by girls I liked (I was too shy to say anything and not trendy enough) , who instead went out with arrogant show-offs and jocks, who said what they wanted to hear. 'Toby's a sweet guy...but....'.
interlude of '300 years'
It took 35 years to realise how angry I was at being used and abused in my professional and personal life, (depression can be understood as this turned it in on self).
SO..... had to do something about it - like so many of my patients - rather than expect pills (or relationships) alone to fix me....so left the NHS
With much time on my hands I took my 'dabbling and doodling' and enrolled in art classes - therapy in itself. Told (surprisingly) that i was quite good.
Art -a couple of years of fab classes at Cheltenham Fine Art School later (great classes and much needed social chit chat too) to save my sanity. Started selling (or giving away) a lot of paintings - helped out in a gallery that got my stuff 'out there'.
In late 2012 diagnosed with quite severe Attention Deficit Disorder. This was poorly understood when I was a child so was not picked up on. It explained why I was considered a 'bit eccentric', clumsy and 'difficult' and not taken seriously by those I loved or cared for. (who'd want to go with someone so weird and shy?!).
The arty stuff helps me to carry on trying to be a jolly soul, remain true to my principles and try to be a positive force for those around me - maybe even in a small way to counteract the growing cynical behaviour so prevelent in today's modern society. As someone once said - 'first do no harm', and a chum - 'give and take' appropriately.

Paintings and limited edition prints regularly in at Brian Crosby Gallery in Montpellier, Cheltenham, UK. Rather than exhibit as such I put pictures up in bars and offices. It's easier and gets the same result and the proprietors like the view! (see website - which is a bit of an 'event' in itself ).
Others 'events' -
First Prize in 'Inspired by The Cotswolds' Landscape Competition exhibition at Corinium Gallery/Museum, Cirencester (UK) 2017
Appearances in Cotswold Life Magazine (January 2016 - I think and March 2017)
Nothing fancy - sell via word of mouth (or eye!). Prints and some originals sold from Brian Crosby Framers and Gallery - Montpellier, Cheltenham. Soon - there will be a website there too.
Just started further afield with selling on this site...and...
