Umut Nur Sungur

Umut Nur Sungur is an Istanbul-based contemporary artist whose work explores perception, fragmentation, and the shifting relationship between image and object. Working across sculpture and painting, her practice investigates how forms can be deconstructed, layered, and reassembled to reveal new visual and conceptual relationships.

In her sculptural work, single forms are sliced and stacked into stratified structures, transforming solid volumes into rhythmic sequences of planes that shift depending on the viewer’s perspective. In her paintings, she similarly explores layering, repetition, and the tension between figure and background, creating compositions that unfold gradually and invite prolonged engagement.

By moving through space or contemplating her painted surfaces, viewers experience perception as an active process. Sungur’s works exist between solidity and illusion, wholeness and fragmentation, questioning how meaning is constructed and how an image can simultaneously appear unified and unstable.
