Valentine E Bossert

Valentine E. Bossert is a Swiss-born artist based in Berlin, working in drawing, printmaking, collage and sculpture.

She trained in drawing at the University of the Arts London and in printmaking at Fondazione Il Bisonte in Florence, holds an MA in Modern European Philosophy, and is currently studying conservation and restoration at HTW Berlin. Each of these disciplines attends to material memory: how it forms, and how it is passed on.

Her work begins with a site and its surfaces: the weathered stones of a Roman amphitheatre, the tool marks of the Carrara quarries, the pavements of Berlin. After researching how a place was built and used, she records it with deliberately simple means borrowed from archaeology and conservation: describing, surveying, reproducing. The results are traces of contact, faithful to their source yet departing from it, fragile in appearance but resistant, closer to memory than to a copy.

In a dematerialised, information-saturated present, the work insists on the tangible and asks for a slower, haptic kind of attention.
