Ward Schepman

Ward Schepman is a Dutch abstract expressionist and performance artist based in Utrecht. He explores the beauty of connection through organic fields of colour, tactile paint surfaces and small human figures. Seen from a distance, his paintings unfold as energetic abstract compositions; up close, miniature figures introduce stories of longing, closeness and the search for one another.

Music shapes every painting. Schepman works with a single track on repeat, translating its rhythm and emotional atmosphere into layers of paint, gestures and lines. The physical surface and the small figures invite viewers to move between looking at the whole and discovering intimate details.

His ongoing 88_ series brings these elements together in an expanding body of individual works. Each painting offers an open encounter rather than a fixed explanation, leaving room for the viewer's own associations. His wider practice includes Countries, For Nout and Roots, connected by an interest in how we relate to ourselves, to one another, to nature and to life.

Schepman has presented work and live painting at BUNK in Utrecht. Through both painting and performance, he seeks to make connection tangible: sometimes with a tear, sometimes with a smile.
