William Rock is an internationally exhibited sculptor and painter. He is a citizen of the USA as well as Ireland. William Rock taught himself to sculpt and paint by visiting museums around the world. He also has had the opportunity to study, as well as teach with, Tibetan and Chinese monks as well as artists, writers, and poets of the various spiritual and philosophical disciplines. His art has been exhibited in museums within the USA, and also shown internationally, where he has spoken and taught extensively on the nature of creativity, mysticism and art. His bronze of the Tibetan Bon Buddhist deity 'Yeshe Walmo' is widely considered to be a sculptural masterpiece.
“With sculpture, my interest is the human figure. I taught myself to sculpt by doing and by studying the origins and history of sculpture. I sat for hours with The Venus of Willendorf in Vienna. I spent many months studying classical Greek sculpture in the Louvre. I contemplated Michelangelo’s work in Florence. I was at the Rodin Museum almost every weekend for a year. I developed a genuine insight into form and light and what makes sculpture come alive. 1997 Begins to teach himself sculpture in earnest.
1995-2000 Created one hundred artworks called “Self- Transcendent Portraits”
(This art was exhibited and was the inspiration for a month long arts celebration held at various locations and galleries in Pittsburgh, Pa. The event was called “Spirit Unfolding” and featured dance, poetry and dialogues inspired by the portraits.)
2003 Commissioned to sculpt and carve the center piece for the internationally known Kearns Spirituality Center Labyrinth in Alison Park, Pennsylvania. The stone is a 300 million year old petrified tree trunk and is visited by hundreds of pilgrims each year. It took one year to carve. It has the face of a Tibetan monk and lotus petals included in the sculpture.
