I work from awkwardness. By that I mean I dont like to arrange things. If I stand in front of something, instead of arranging it, I arrange myself Diane Arbus. My work can perhaps best be described as a steadfast celebration of things as they are, sometimes shocking in its purity. The goal of my photography is to capture moments which encompass the "real" lives and personas of my subjects, whether they be family units or more solitary figures living on the fringes of society. As far as possible I aim to be the invisible photographer, capturing those unmasked states of being where the subjects are at their moments of uncoordinated and unconscious repose. As such these photograhps never sought to portray some kind of shocking or gruesome aspect of reality, but the honesty of human emotion, away from the realm of rigid self-consciousness which we popularly hold up as the image of normality. The photographic approach focuses on simplicity, yet questions the meaning of the word "simple"; this collection seeks to expose the synonymity of light and dark, joy and pain, stark and bright in each moment of daily life.
