In 1974 I started as a photojournalist working eventually for eight newspapers, the last 15 years as Director of Photography for The Birmingham News. During that time I receiving many awards including runner-up for the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography.
My time as a photojournalist was fulfilling, but I always wanted a chance to break the rules and do something that did not have photojournalism’s rigid ethical standards. When I started shooting my Scapes, I found that missing piece.
