Yeo Tze Yang (b.1994, Singapore)
Yeo Tze Yang is a painter of Singaporean life. Most of his works as of recent date are painted from observation. He makes "˜self portraits', not of himself but of the things that made him as the person he is today, which include the mundane and unremarkable places, people and things that are part of his everyday life, as unsensational as it can be. Despite attempts to make his work objective, the result is often the opposite: emotional and sentimental.
He cites painters like Liu Xiaodong, Lucian Freud, George Shaw and Antonio Lopez Garcia as influences, as well as glam rock, ambient music, TV shows, movies, everyday happenings and conversations as inspirations. Through his work, he attempts to grapple with simple neglected truths in their rawest form, and in the process, learning more about himself as a person.
Graduating from National Junior College in 2012 with top scores in Art, he continues to paint everyday while serving his national service. He has been part of a number of exhibitions despite his young age, at locations such as the LASALLE College of the Arts, Goodman Arts Centre and Kult Gallery.
