Yolante Karwinska

I was born in Scotland of Polish parents , we moved to Kent in England when I turned three years old.
Painting and drawing from an early age I developed a deep love for nature. My early Kentish landscapes would depict trees, horses and wild flowers. My connection with the natural world grew, light and colour became more predominant


in my work.
With my pastels I found that I could replicate the texture of the poppy or iris flower, with my oils I could transfer the canvas into a wild, living and breathing field of wild flowers.
A fresh start later in life by moving to the South-West of France, Tarn-et-Garonne, found me completely immersed in the gentle, undulating countryside. My paintings consisted entirely of landscapes and the flora and fauna of this wonderfully un-spolit region.
Later, moving to Provence in the Var, still in France, I became inspired by the light of this region constantly changing along with each season. I continued painting along similar themes but introduced ancient buildings made of local multi coloured ochre stone, domestic animals, customs and traditions all of which play a large part of the life here.

I was educated in England and went to
Folkestone Art School Folkestone Kent where I studied
Fashion, Textiles, Design, Fabric Design, Life Drawing, Pottery, Photography, Art History and Painting.
Later in life I studied for a degree at
Christchurch University College Canterbury Kent
Art Degree in Fine Art course; painting, life and still life drawing, silver-point etching, sculpture , art history, and colour theory.
My earliest memories of becoming interested in art was from looking at the master draughtsman Edgar Degas' work. His pastel palette and composition, his ballerinas waiting in the wings with their facial and body expressions all appealed to me. Horses next were my subjects for painting and I was helped greatly by a small book entitled 'How to draw Horses' by John Skeaping. From then my love of drawing from nature developed and after obtaining both O' and A' level art, attended Folkestone School of Art. After completing a year of a Foundation course I decided that a teaching career was not for me. My working life was varied, I tried many careers but always found myself wanting to paint full-time which I managed in my spare time.
