Zensho W Kopp

My name is Zensho W. Kopp. I was born in 1938 and I am an authorised Zen master, artist and author. For over thirty years now I have been in charge of the Zen Center Tao Chan in Wiesbaden, Germany. From a young age, I became very interesting in Asian wisdom teachings and began an extensive study of the scriptures of Zen Buddhism, Taoism and West-Eastern spirituality. The richness of inner life which I experienced through meditation and contemplation became a profound inspiration for my art. Since then, it has been the focus of my painting to fathom the innermost core of things and to express them in a free-flowing way.

My path as a painter began in the 1950s when I first met the well-known artist Adam Wallauer. Mr. Wallauer, who studied amongst others under Max Beckmann and Karl-Schmitt-Rottluff and was friends with Ernst Wilhelm Nay, became my teacher, friend and mentor.

In the 1970s, I had many exhibitions in a variety of art galleries in the Rhine-Main area of central Germany. However, since 1985 my primary pursuit has been my work as a Zen master and thus my exhibitions have become fewer. Working on the various books I have written became a priority, yet nonetheless, my paintings continue to be displayed and sold in the “Galerie Modern Art“ in Wiesbaden.
