Yet, their naive imagery is predominantly stylized and has an illusDariusz Labuzek’s work is celebrated for its illustrative quality, deeply rooted in an abstract, painterly aesthetic. The compelling nature of his art lies in the juxtaposition of abstraction and figuration, alongside a seamless fusion of mixed media, gestures, and symbols. His figures serve as vessels—dynamic forms waiting to be filled with textures, colors, and concepts. Together, these elements create captivating compositions that spark our curiosity and engage the imagination.Driven by a distinct sculptural sensibility—likely informed by his background in architecture and filmmaking—Labuzek frequently repeats specific motifs, yet ensures every painting remains utterly unique. He begins by exploring the relationships between fundamental painterly concepts: texture, color, line, and form. This conceptual interplay allows him to examine how we perceive a painting, probing the depth and nuance of his materials while manipulating how we view the picture plane. While some of his figures evoke the texture of copper or collage-like cutouts, others lean toward a more illustrative style. This absolute freedom of expression—the pursuit of articulating the emotional and poetic essence of an image through paint—is a legacy that preoccupied many influential 20th-century artists. Thinkers and creators who laid the foundation for Labuzek’s own creative journey include Pablo Picasso, Antoni Tàpies, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Agustí Puig, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Artur Nacht-Samborski, Cy Twombly, Zdzisław Beksiński, Jacek Göttel, Richard Diebenkorn, Jackson Pollock, the Zhou Brothers, Roger Ballen, and Gerhard Richter. Labuzek proudly continues in this tradition as an artist deeply in love with his medium. He is driven by the infinite possibilities of brush and paint, creating an abstract world of strange, humanoid figures that brilliantly illuminate our imagination.Born in Poland, Labuzek studied architecture at the Institute of Technology in Kraków. He immigrated to the United States in 1990, where he attended the film and theater program at Humboldt State University in California. In 1992, he relocated to Chicago. In 2016 he moved to California. His studio was closed in 2024.
