About The Artwork

After a stage of interest in graffiti and working the walls in open spaces, the idea occurred to me that I could construct and recycle those surfaces of faded cardboard posters in my own studio and trace on them all those memories that time had covered and concealed. My work represents a constant search for beauty through aging matter. The drawings, which appear over collages glued on cardboard, canvas or wooden panels, are made on old posters sourced from illegal billposting places in Madrid and Sydney. In the very act of tearing layers of paper stuck to facades, I reconnect with the world of archaeological excavations where I used to work when I finished my BA. To reconstruct the fragments forming bleached paper collages I enjoy myself getting involved in a sort of hunting, capturing images with graphite, charcoal or traces of black oil, in a chaotic avalanche of characters that appears before my eyes through the folds and contours of the paper. Animals and human figures that either I hear and see in my daily life or I simply imagine, cover the surface of my collages the same way painted prehistoric creatures covered the walls inside ancient caves. For me, each finished collage is a magic site excavated in memory.

Gorluak is a Spanish artist who lives and works in Sydney. Inspired by street art and the urban environment, her work represents a constant search for beauty through aging matter. Her drawings, which appear over collages, are made on posters sourced from illegal billposting places in Madrid and Sydney. To reconstruct the fragments forming bleached paper collages, Gorluak develops what she called “the ghost hunting”, capturing images with graphite, charcoal or traces of black oil, in a chaotic avalanche of characters that appears before her eyes through the folds and contours of the paper. For her, each finished collage is a site excavated in memory.
