Arles, a new Town Collage

The urban landscape of the city of Arles was radically modified by the construction in the perspective of Alyscamps, an ancient Roman necropolis, of the Luma Tower, a splendid creation by architect Frank Gehry. This immense site which houses the SNCF workshops, now in ruins, was nothing more than an abandoned desert and an arid expanse. Thanks to Maja Hoffmann, it has been the subject of a splendid landscape rehabilitation: volumes have been created by considerable additions of fertile land, more than 500 trees planted around an immense pond, thus creating a real lung for Arles landscape capable of lasting and expanding in the future. Initially, I made a photomontage of an old photo of the Alyscamps basilica, and a current personal photo of the Luma Tower by merging them arbitrarily. Then on this print, comes the collage in the alley of tombs: an ancient bust witness to Romanity and a bather at the edge of a very small pool supposed to bear witness to the pond! where the reflection of an enormous work of contemporary art is reflected, the one which is visible to visitors to the new Workshops thus rehabilitated.
