About The Artwork

Art Statement: How can we move forward towards true equality when we elect a man into the highest office in the world who has openly spoken about objectifying and mistreating women? It sends a message to males everywhere that behaviour of this sort is acceptable. Various words are stitched into the background of this piece including: ‘Nice Girls Don’t’, ‘Eat Your Words’, ‘Trust Me’ and ‘Think.” Created for the 'Threads of Resistance' curated exhibition when Trump's words of being able to "grab women on the pussy" were fresh in my mind. My concept for this artquilt was immediate, a visceral reaction put into imagery. The model stands strong, with no vulnerability on show, a direct gaze to camera, her defiance palpable. This piece has been shown as part of the political "Threads of Resistance" exhibition throughout the USA at both quilt shows and museums. This wall art is created with an intensively stitched and quilted silk top. Giclée printing (original photo) has been used for the image which has then been accented with metal foil finger flames. Stitching has been done using ultra fine 100 wt thread for a highly textured background.

I'm an Australian artist specialising in textile and art quilt based works. I regularly write for textile art and quilting magazines, run the 'Textile Arts' group on Facebook, am a participating member of the 'Art Quits Around the World blog group who produce a work to a theme every 2 months and my artworks are exhibited internationally. So far in 2014 my Piece 'Plight of the Bumblebee' was selected for the curated 'Living Colour' international exhibition and my quilt 'I+V+III+1' (Stillbirth) made it into the AQC premier exhibition and competition 'Ten'. I believe that the best textile based works should not only be well designed, beautiful and possess a tactile quality that invites the viewer in, but should also be technically brilliant in their execution. I quite literally fell into a fine art career after fracturing my back in a fall that left me having to lay down for much of the next few years and voided me from continuing as a full time corporate art director and graphic designer. I began doing palette knife applied oils on canvas as in my limited working time I was able to cover a fair amount of canvas. Since then as extended sitting has become more possible my main body of work has developed into often highly detailed textile and art quilt based work.
