A series of about 20 works by Tomek Kawiak, created in the 1970s in Paris, is called in French "Dessins Circonstanciels". This means that the artist's working tools - pencil, crayons, brush, paint tubes... - are attached with a string in the center, or in appropriate places in the picture, on a designated radius, measured with a ruler - a set square - a meter - a compass. They move as if on a leash, leaving traces on the image. The picture itself is made of thick cardboard (2 cm thick, covered with special paper). After leaving traces, the tools are inlaid in the painting and remain there for eternity, confirming their function and wear. The series of these works was first exhibited in 1976 at the Blu Gallery in Rome, then at the Primo Piano Gallery in Milan, and in 1977 at Studio Francia Pisani in Florence. After arriving in Paris, this was the first series of painting works by Tomek Kawiak. These are reflections on painting tools and the metric system (the meter pattern is in the museum in Sèvres near Paris). It was as if I wanted to start everything from the "beginning". The work was made in 1973 in Paris.
