My ongoing series: In Fertility is a discussion of women’s mental powerlessness in our reproductive biology. It is a reflection of the range of emotions and thoughts in the theme of reproduction, undergoing fertility issues and going through fertility treatment under the shadow of increased government interference in women’s reproductive sovereignty. My artwork is symbolically female in spirit and represents the biological and spiritual parts of a woman. In talks with other women, I found the common strand of a complete helplessness in ones own biological fertility and reproductive autonomy. It seems in every facet, society and by in terms, life, make women disenfranchised from their own reproductive decisions. My series explores that out of control feeling, out of control of our reproductive choices, out of control over the narrative of being objectified by biological parts, losing independent identity and being signaled out in society as the mothers of sin in one variation or another. Women are never the innocents in any narrative story. Consider the narratives we see in the media. The misogynistic fog is so thick and so ever evolving that we as women are again and again, disenfranchised from our own narratives as we point fingers at each other. As well, those in conservative governmental positions are actively fighting to repeal women’s reproductive rights that either directly or indirectly further disenfranchise her from reproductive choices. In the scheme of social justice, even those that are sympathetic to the pro-choice movement regularly check out once the subject of abortion is over. Many people do not understand the ramifications of female reproductive care under government regulation that extends beyond abortion rights. One must remember Savita Halappanavar, who died from sepsis when she was was denied care during labor because of the doctor’s interpretation of a similar heartbeat bill in Ireland. I think there has never been a more adequate time to talk about women’s reproductive lives than today. Women’s reproductive issues are important and right now more important to discuss than ever. From fertility care not being covered by insurance, abortion rights being striped away, the stigma to talk about the isolation of miscarriage, how the medical and legal field treats women's health, and how conservative and progressive men have had different methods of silencing and controlling women. One by creating societal shame and stigma and the other by oppressive and not medically informed law-making. I want to illustrate the powerlessness, the blame, the disenfrachisement of the body vs. mind and the spiritual mystery of a woman’s reproductive story. My artwork illustrates women's parts divorced from their minds and the literal battlefield of good, healthy, normal and virtuous vs. bad, abnormal, and evil. Fertility issues is an invisible female struggle that isn’t discussed broadly, as are many female reproductive issues. Women undergoing fertility treatments will have to deal with the misogyny of the medical field to the embarrassment and discomfort of side effects and treatment. Women’s bodies are a battleground that that is in the intersection of medical issues, governmental control and spirituality. My series will intertwine the general fear and anxieties in fertility over the spiritual, the sexual and the scientific and will include the cascade of emotions from anticipation and aspiration to humiliation, anger, disappointment and grief. My series will give a voice to women undergoing fertility issues and treatment as well as bring awareness to reproductive injustice.
