ABOUT THE ARTWORK

France France is a print based on a torn cardboard collage produced in 1993. I doubled the image to double the France France text on the piece. *(I could also produce a single image if you like). France France is the Venus de Milo, her insides exposed. We see her cardboard bones, her layers of man made myth, the simple character of material. I typically work with collage, paper and cardboard. I thought since so many people liked this image on my instagram, I'd make a double piece. Something I wanted to see for myself. As I live in France and we are undergoing a difficult political period, this work of Venus with her arms removed, her insides exposed as cardboard, seems pretty prescient. Feel free to share it about with friends or lovers of Venus or those worrying about France. – Matthew Rose / Paris, France

MATTHEW ROSE lives and works in Paris, France. Known widely for his collage works and wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor installations, he graduated from Brown University (1981) with a degree in Semiotics/Linguistics. Influenced by Americans Ray Johnson, Jasper Johns, Joseph Cornell and a handful of French surrealists, Rose works late hours ripping apart paper and bits of text to remake contemporary life into a specific, yet unbound book, what the artist calls his “theory of everything.” "Most of my work involves collage; I cut and paste in all flavors. But I draw, paint, sculpt, find, assemble and put together words as well. I'm always working, I never close." CURRENTLY: Published Coronaville. A graphic novella about the Trump Pandemic.
