The Carnation Revolution (Portuguese: Revolução dos Cravos), also known as the 25th of April (Portuguese: 25 de Abril), was initially a 25 April 1974 military coup in Lisbon which overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo regime.[1] The revolution began as a coup organised by the Armed Forces Movement (Portuguese: Movimento das Forças Armadas, MFA), composed of military officers who opposed the regime, but it was soon coupled with an unanticipated, popular civil resistance campaign. The revolution led to the fall of the Estado Novo, the end of 48 years of authoritarian rule in Portugal, and Portugal's withdrawal from its African colonies. Its name arose from the fact that almost no shots were fired, and Celeste Caeiro offered carnations to the soldiers when the population took to the streets to celebrate the end of the dictatorship; other demonstrators followed suit, and carnations were placed in the muzzles of guns and on the soldiers' uniforms.[2] In Portugal, 25 April is a national holiday (Portuguese: Dia da Liberdade, Freedom Day) which commemorates the revolution. Portugal
Contemporary Portuguese visual artist, born in 1976 in Viana do Castelo. My journey in art is deeply influenced by my academic and professional background in design. As a Master in Industrial Design and visual artist, I use functionality and objectivity—the fundamental pillars of design—as a starting point to create a contemporary artistic discourse that deconstructs these very foundations. Through synthesis, geometry, and references to industrialization, I explore the balance between technical precision and creative freedom. Sketches, three-dimensional models, and digital tools are the cornerstone of my creative process, allowing me to build a bridge between the physical world and my emotional, conscious, and unconscious experiences. Each piece is a reflection synthesized into geometric forms and symbols that, for me, embody the essence of nature's creation and the complexity of our existence. In my practice, I strive to harmonize manual production and technology, exploring abstractions that evoke balance, transformation, and a fresh perspective on our connection to the world. My goal is to propose a shift in consciousness, a change in meaning, or a renewed relationship with our surroundings. I invite you to explore these creations, where art becomes a medium for reflection, insight, and emotion, transforming geometric simplicity into a rich expression of ideas and meanings.
