“Future Warrior (The Future Is Now)“ This work started with a catharsis, triggered by an event in my life. At a time in my career, I was the technical coordinator of a group working with some local museums. One of the historians, watching the way I was taking notes, giving directions and do a set of tasks at the same time, commented that I had the mind of a woman. I understood what she was talking about and naturally, took it as a compliment. It is genetic and although majorly associated with the female gender, it can also occur in males: cooking, looking after the children, answering the phone and many times run a busy career, all at the same time. Women continue to be seen as inferior beings; instead of thanking her compliment, everyone around us looked embarrassed; I just thanked her and replied it had to do with genetics. We smiled at each other. I wanted to represent someone who "could be me". In many ways we connect to feelings, souls. It didn’t matter who the person would be, or where from. But it would have to have inner qualities I’d admire, so I could “incarnate it”. The story unraveled itself. This “painting” was constructed with a selection of articles regarding the Middle East. The major focus was on a figure who didn’t identify him/herself but who was the first Syrian transvestite. The intertwining of these two subjects was the result of a research about the conflicts in the Middle East, but also for example, the risks a person such as this one is exposed to, as a consequence of assuming his/her identity. The ever more present gender fluidity is difficult to accept, specially amongst more conservative people around the world, with a hatred towards anyone falling under the category of other; this may include a variety of roles, for that matter, not just gender. The transvestite is represented as an hybrid fighter, a warrior who fights not to hide him/herself. Among all kinds of references about violence and war, appears an image in black and white – the shadow of the warrior – it is a computer anatomical approximation of one of the Isis leaders - one fights to become visible, the shadow, to become invisible. The results of studies about homophobia point to the probability of unresolved issues by those who slaughter “others”. The figure behind includes references to homosexuality and consequently, is associated to the LGBTQ minorities. They are not as few as many lead us to believe. The Syrian transvestite becomes a symbol of the “future warrior” and the future is now. Measures: 100cm x 70cm
