Collage, Metal on Glass
Size: 5.5 W x 7.5 H x 3 D in
Description: Companion piece to Hatshepsut 1 with circa 1890 map of Egypt. My medium is collage and shadow box construction. I work with hand made papers, found images, old maps, objects and text. I am interested in the interaction of disparate images, shapes, patterns and textures while attempting to reduce a subject to a sparse but evocative image. I try to create work that is iconographic and meditative. I once read that when the tomb of Hatshepsut was found, 3 of her canopic jars had been stolen and only one remained. This was the starting point for the 2 Hapshepsut shadow box constructions. The elements inside box are free-moving. Glass bottle contains printed paper image of Hatshepsut. Blocks contain constellations maps of the sky. Small brass pyramid hangs from brass rod at top. Interior and exterior of box are covered in paper. Box has protective glass front. It has a fixture for hanging flush against a wall or can stand on a flat surface. Medium: paper, wood, glass, metal Year Created: 2003

United States
Born USA 1944. Indie film director and collage artist, currently based in New York. For the past 40 years I have constructed collages and shadow boxes for private collectors. My work centers around the theme of cultural identity. Much of my life has been spent outside the United States (French Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East) in places where I needed to acquire a new language, learn a new alphabet and adhere to the subtleties of different social customs. These are places with their own cultural narratives, simultaneously rejecting and welcoming American influences, absorbing and transforming them to fit a new cultural space. It seems a natural consequence of this global mix that I work in a collage format, appropriating the language, signs and icons of other cultures, regardless of the medium. I attempt to reduce a subject to a few evocative images, treating image as icon.
